Pedal Cars are finally coming into their own! We were invited to display pedal cars at the very prestigious 2004 Concours d'Elegance at Cranbrook, this year's featured theme was "European influenced design and technology". Additionally we were asked to create a display that would reflect the European design influence on the children's sized automobile to mirror the full size automobile event. Cranbrook is a 315 acre National Historic Landmark Campus. Originally the home of George Gough Booth and Ellen Scripps Booth this is the oldest surviving manor home in the metro Detroit area. (Michigan) There are 40 acres of gardens that surround the original home with sculpture, fountains and spacious lawns. This was the setting for the 2004 Concours d'Elegance. We we fortunate to be given a prime location between the Triton Pools and the Orpheus Fountain. Betty & Bill Reenders of Michigan brought their 1938 child size BMW 328i "BEBE" roadster. In 1974 a sheik from Saudi Arabia commissioned Franco Sbarro to build this child's size automobile for his children at a cost of $13,000. The car remained in Saudi Arabia until 2001 when a Pakistani negotiated for the car and had it shipped to the United States. The Reenders purchased the car in 2002 fully restored. The BEBE is a full functioning automobile with a 2.4 hp electric engine. Joe Cantore Jr. from Illinois brought four great vehicles from the Joseph Cantore Collection: 1930 Renault model Trima 4; 1909 Dideon Bertone; c1928 Bugatti; c1933 hand made race car from France, complete with the riding outfit worn by the original owner. Al Hill displayed his very historic 1953 Corvette built by Harley Earl Studios. We displayed a 1952 Jaguar XK120 hand built in England and our 1935 Delahaye.
